KARKIDAKA CHIKITSA
( MONSOON AYURVEDIC REGIMEN)
" rejuvenating in the rains…."

Karkidaka chikitsa is a traditional Ayurvedic practice followed in Kerala, since ages. Monsoon (karkidakam) is considered as the most challenging season of the year, in regard to health. Incessant rains and prevailing dampness, increases the vulnerability of disease afflicting microbes and in turn, our weakened body with low immunity and imbalanced doshas, are more susceptible to illness during this season.

To address such inflictions during monsoon and to minimize their impact, our ancestors incorporated several healthy practices to promote healing and for prolonged well being, the so called “ Karkidaka chikitsa”. This regimen encompasses a series of events ranging from spiritual habits, kindling digestive fire, medicated gruel intake, therapeutic regimen and satsanga. The chief objective is to detoxify, alleviate ailments, enhance immunity and in turn a complete “rejuvenation”. Packages can be availed for the same which includes treatments like Abhyangam, Pizhichil, Vasthi, Sirodhara, Nasyam, Virechanam etc. Other procedures like Ela kizhi, Podi kizhi, Njavara kizhi etc are done as directed by the physician depending on the health status of the person.

KARKIDAKA KANJI (MEDICATED PORRIDGE): A nutritious and health packed rice gruel, advised during the monsoon season, which is prepared of njavara rice (shashtikam) along with various herbal powders, seasoned with shallots and ghee. It is a formulation which is easily digestive with ample benefits to boost our immune system. Foods that are carminative and easily digestive are considered ideal for consumption during this season.
